A thatched-roof experience that will delight your genes
Torobe Week Special Workshop
This workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn and experience the thatched roofing techniques passed down from the Jomon period, and to share these skills with others. The reconstructed dwellings at the Toro ruins, the landscape depicted in Utagawa Hiroshige's ukiyo-e print "Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido: Mariko-juku," the roof of Chojiya (a famous tororo soup restaurant still operating in Mariko), and the roof of Togetsumine Shibaya-ji Temple near Takumi-juku—all share the "thatched roofing technique." The instructor is Masaya Mine, a thatched roof craftsman who worked on the roofs of Chojiya and Shibaya-ji Temple. This is a valuable opportunity to learn firsthand from a leading craftsman about his approach to materials and the long-standing skills of master craftsmanship. Participants will receive a mini broom made from thatch as a gift. The thatched hut we built will be on display in the courtyard of Takumi-juku until October 20th, so please come and visit with your family and friends!
Torobe, the Suruga Ward Support Team Leader, is also scheduled to visit on the day of the workshop. Let's experience thatching together!
